S(E)O,What? and Why?

“Search engine optimization is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines.” reference – webopedia

Firstly, there is so much on the internet on SEO, but it seems mysterious…I remember trying to find out what it was about, and getting nowhere. That was when I decided to enroll in an seo course which made all the difference.

Due to the competitiveness of the internet, google hasso many sites to index and “decide”, what to serve up to the user when he/she does a search. So it is no longer a case of simply setting a keyword and expecting “your site”, to pop up in search when that keyword/phrase is searched for. It requires a well co-ordinated balance of multiple factors.

The user

A recurring topic in the course was the importance, ALWAYS, to consider the end user. When considering content, how will this benefit the user? When considering user experience, how effortless is it for the user to navigate around the site, find what they are looking for, view images without loading lag etc. Then overall site speed. There are a variety of influencers on site speed and performance, and there are mechanisms used for optimising these. Have a look at these tips from Moz on Page speed-SEO best practices

The truth is, there isn’t a quick fix answer to it, like simply take these steps…it needs to be a process you have followed throughout the design and development of your website.

In the beginning…

Choices made right from the inception of an idea. Something as simple as a domain name, needs to be considered in terms of SEO. Try to keep the name of the item/service/product somewhere in the domain name. Sounds obvious? But not always the case. Take a look at Moz-Domains-SEO best practices for tips on choosing a suitable domain name.

SEO is not just about the on-site factors, some of which I have discussed above. But also off-site factors.

It requires constant reading of the latest goings on in search and the ranking signals google considers, when ranking your site. The reason being, so that you can provide the most authoritative, great quality websites for your users to enjoy!
